How does contactless work?

We'll keep it simple. Every contactless card has a NFC (near field communication) chip in it, which holds the person's information.

Using RFID technology (radio frequency identification), the chip gives off radio waves, which is picked up by the card machine when the card is tapped against it. This lets the card and the machine talk to each other to process a payment.

The card only works within a few centimetres of the card machine, so you can't accidentally pay for someone else’s shopping.

It’s super safe, with each payment being encrypted. Plus, no one can peek over your shoulder to look at your PIN as you enter it.

Yes. The main difference between a normal card payment and a contactless card payment is how the card is used with the card reader.
They both use a merchant account for processing payments. It’s separate to your business bank account, and it’s where all your card payment transactions are checked and processed. Once done, the funds are sent to your account where you can access the money three to five business days later.
Before your customer can use their contactless credit and debit card, they’ll need to activate it first. To do this, they’ll need to use the card at an ATM. They’ll also need to pay for something on their card using their PIN number, similar to how you would when you want to pay using a standard card.
As extra security, contactless payments are capped at £30 so, if your customers card is lost or stolen, it can’t be used for large payments.
They’re also limited on how many payments they can make in 24 hours. So, if it’s used for 4 contactless payments in 24 hours, they’ll then be asked to enter their PIN for the fifth time to check who’s using it.
The card also is protected against double-taps, so they can’t accidentally pay twice.

You’ll normally be able to process payments up to £30 with contactless.
However, during the coronavirus pandemic, the amount has been increased to £45.

There’s no additional set-up or cost for contactless. All our card machines come with the technology pre-installed, so your customers can tap and go straight away.
